quiz on global warming

Imagine if the world had not used  fossil fuels to produce electricity 100 years back and would have met all  its energy requirement using solar panels (80 %) and the remaining from waves , wind and tides . We would not have cut the forest i.e we would have maintained it at 1918 level.( no decrease in forest area) In this situation the global temperature would have ?
A. Increase in the last 100 years
B. Remained same in the last hundred years.
C. It would have decreased.

  3. The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.Since 1978, a series of satellite instruments have measured the energy output of the Sun directly. The satellite data show a very slight drop in solar irradiance (which is a measure of the amount of energy the Sun gives off) over this time period. So the Sun doesn't appear to be responsible for the warming trend observed over the past several decades. On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture, industry, and other human activities has increased concentrations of greenhouse gases. You can see that the average temperature had been slightly decreasing from 1880 to 1915. It was only after 1915 that the temperatures started to rise. After the 2nd Industrial Revolution, temperatures rose rapidly and are still rising. During the 2nd Industrial Revolution, coal and petroleum were burnt extensively to produce electricity. In addition to this, several forests were cut down. This changed the natural dynamics of the Earth which rose the temperatures rapidly, which was not normal. Now, you may ask, why wasn't that normal. It wasn't normal because there has been a slight drop in solar irradiance since 1950. Solar irradiance affect the temperatures on Earth naturally, since ages. So, if there would have not been commercial burning of fossil fuels for producing electricity and forests had not been cut down, it is evident that the temperatures would have decreased, to an extent that some scientists believe which could have brought another Ice Age.

  4. Thank you Shubhneet , very well explained. In fact the varying solar irradiance is responsible for warm age and ice age
